The weather in Rome has been so hot lately. I have spent most days sweating, naked in the garden. My allover tan has really improved and I am very happy to show it if anyone wants a glimpse.
I love summer.
I have really fond childhood memories of this time of the year. Long sunny days spent with family and summer friends. Time did not seem to pass as quickly and the day went on and on.I would be up early and I always felt I went to bed late. It was impossible to sleep early as everyone around was out and about eating ice cream, chatting and being generally noisy. If you wanted to sleep it would have to be afternoon when you took your nap and I never did. Outside fun was always beckonning. I have not changed.
I have always enjoyed the evenings too. Last night for example, just before dusk, I took a long walk by the canals near where I live.
The sun was dipping below the pine trees of the Pineta and had lost its heat. It was a pleasant warmth that was helped by a slight breeze that was coming off the woodlands.
Along the bank of the canal the frogs croaked and when I neared flung themselves into the water to hide. They croaked away as if enjoying the moment as much as me.
Above the swifts were so numerous they darkened the sky. They dipped and soared searching for insects that had also come out when the summer heat had left. I love this bird and although they are meant to appear in March, 'San Benedetto, rondini sotto il tetto', I never really see them until this time.
Although hot and dry the fields are covered in wonderful wild flowers. There is a vision of, blues and yellows, whites and mauves. It is a very moving scene and one I am very happy to witness.
I am lucky!
So if you are feeling stressed , unhappy, unloved or generally down in the mouth take a long evening walk. I am sure that will make you feel better.
If it doesn't come and visit me I know that I will give you some memorable moments.

I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine.
