Any of you who read my blogs will realise that I enjoy going to Capocotta Beach in Rome. It is a nudist beach and one of the few places in Italy where you are legally allowed to throw off all your clothes. Yesterday, however, I tried to understand my love for the place and here are a few of the things that make it my kind of place and one I feel totally relaxed in.
1. Naked. It is so wonderful to lie in the sun naked. It is so lovely to walk into the sea totally naked and it is so wonderful to swim naked. And I don't have the stress and expense of buying swimwear!
2. Sound. This can be on any beach but it is better naked. I lie and liisten to the sea. The sea like life never stops. It is always moving and talking and it does this in many different ways.
3. Smell. Again this is any beach but better when naked! You can smell the sea when you cannot see it. It has that salty, fresh smell that is like the smell of good food. It excites and beckons.
4. Cooling. Again Capocotta is no different to other beaches. But it is cooler when naked. You can be sweating just 3kms away from the sea, I should know as I live 3kms from the sea, but when on the beach this stops. You get a cooling breeze and when hot you just go in the water. Bliss!
5. Sand. The sand at Capocotta is much lighter than further along at Ostia. It is more pleasant to look at. The sand changes as you near the sea. It becomes harder, cooler and easier to walk on. The sand away from the sea burns and scorches the bottom of your feet. It is fun to see people darting from shade to shade to avoid the pain. Sand also is a teller of tales. It tells us who has walked on it. And yet the story is not a permanent one. Soon all hase been removed and it is as before, it is a brand new canvas.
6.Space The beaches along the dunes stretch for many kilometres. You have this wonderful vista of space. Now in summer this space does get occupied and it is like being a sardine at times, but not Capocotta. There are places along this part of the beach where you do get space. This may be due to nudism but it is more due to not having designated paths to them. You have to walk. And on hot days people do not like to walk!
7..Life. Capocotta definitely is about life. People who go to this beach often lie on the periphery of society. They often have differing sexual tastes to many, have different bodies too many and are often pushing social boundaries. On the beach you can sit and listen to some amazing stories. I know it is wrong to eavesdrop but we all do it and we all love doing it. I do it a lot when I lay on the beach. And it is fun.
But all beaches tell us something about dreams and yearnings. We look to the horizon. It looks reachable but it cannot be reached. A horizon always lies beyond the horizon. Sometimes when we look to the horizons we forget or do not appreciate where we are and what we have. When I sit naked on the beach at Capocotta I look around me and maybe I do not need to be heading for those horizons.
I do have a very pleasant all over tan that loves to be admired. Anyone wanting to admire and touch it can do so.
